How Garry Elali from Geotwin increased his bottom line
Surveyors are passionate about solving problems. Unfortunately, processing data can take time, though thanks to technological innovation, surveyors deliver better client results.
Background
Garry Elali is the operations manager of Geotwin, the sister company of Road & Civil Surveys. ‘We digitise assets and structures. We focus on data capture, design and build in the construction industry. Most of our clients are designers, architects, developers’, says Garry.
The Geotwin team capture their data with drones, scanners, lidar sensors or anything else that does the job.
Garry is passionate about innovative data capture of assets and structures. ‘I love innovation. I’m always looking for something that will save money, be efficient and safe.’
With over 20 years of experience in surveying, utilities and ground-penetrating radar, Garry enjoys finding fit-for-purpose solutions for his client’s challenges. ‘My goal is to solve client problems’, he says. ‘And that includes giving survey results that are accurate, efficient, at a cost that works for the client and at a margin that works for the business.’ For Garry, this entails improving his business with the right resources and equipment while maintaining excellent quality. Additionally, Garry has operational goals, including scaling the business. ‘I’m excited about building a business from scratch; scaling it is part of the fun.’
Challenge
Garry’s main challenges at work are getting results and being obstructed by barriers to scaling his business. ‘This shows up in getting stuck with certain technology and ways of working’, he says. ‘Often in surveying, people will say ‘this is the way we do it’ — but when you are open to innovation, you discover surveying solutions that fit better.’
Solution & Outcomes
‘Work should be exciting’, says Garry. ‘And one way of supporting that is to leverage innovation in technology to find efficiencies, so you spend more time on the stuff you enjoy. For me, that’s spending more time on innovation, safety, and relationship building — rather than getting a workflow to function within tight deadlines or wondering why I can’t get the data in the format my clients need.’
Garry has used surveying equipment for years and recently tried Emlid GNSS receivers. ‘Emlid Reach RS2+ enabled Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning for my Emesent lidar. It cut down my processing and data manipulation time because it is in the right geospatial world.’
Garry values the user interface of Emlid Flow, the software side of Emlid Reach RS2+. ‘With Emlid Flow, I get to the bottom of things faster. If you don’t need all the attributes an app offers, they become noise, which doesn’t help efficiency.’ ‘You can’t move fast if you’re scrolling around many attributes you don’t need when doing bulk earthworks and rough setouts’, says Garry.’ Emlid Flow made data processing intuitive — now I don’t have to spend much time learning or training my team.’ ‘Emlid Flow is great for someone who’s never used any surveying software tools.’
Garry finds the other functionalities of Emlid GNSS receivers great, especially the integration Emlid Flow 360 provides, which allows him to communicate and collaborate quickly with his team.
Garry is clear that Emlid Reach RS2+ with Emlid Flow helps him work more efficiently. ‘By being more efficient, I’m finding what I need quicker and putting it to good use.’ Despite that, Garry’s turning point was seeing his bottom line grow due to Emlid GNSS receivers. ‘Making Emlid GNSS receivers more efficient translated into reducing my surveying cost by $20 per hour.’
He defines the value of Mangoesmapping and Emlid GNSS receivers succinctly: ‘If I was going to describe Emlid GNSS receivers, I’d say they are simple, cost-effective, and efficient, which are great benefits for scaling a business.’
