The 2025 IPWEA-QNT Annual Conference
Mangoesmapping is proud to be part of the 2025 IPWEA Queensland and Northern Territory (IPWEA-QNT) Annual Conference, taking place at the Royal ICC in Brisbane from 8–10 October 2025.
Our team members Ugurtan Akyurek (Geospatial Scientist / Remote Pilot) and Andrew Cleland (Software Developer turned Surveyor) will be co-presenting in Stream 9: Water & Stormwater, sharing insights from our recent work with Cook Shire Council.
Supporting Regional Councils with Smarter Asset Management
Cook Shire Council in Far North Queensland, faced a familiar challenge: fragmented and outdated water and sewer asset data. Records were often locked away in paper files, legacy GIS systems, or the memories of long-serving staff. This made it difficult to respond quickly to emergencies, created inefficiencies in maintenance, and put knowledge retention at risk.
Mangoesmapping partnered with Council to deliver a practical, two-phase solution:
Field capture and spatial realignment of all surface-visible water and sewer assets using RTK GNSS and total stations.
Implementation of a mobile-friendly, web-based GIS platform, built on open-source technology and integrated with live state datasets — accessible across Council departments and usable in the field.
This approach has delivered tangible results:
Water meter reading times cut by up to 40%
Data access increased five-fold
Faster emergency response capability
Long-term sustainability, with Council owning both the system and the equipment required to maintain it
Recognised for Excellence
We are delighted that the Cook Shire Council Water & Sewer Assets Project has been nominated in two categories at the 2025 IPWEA-QNT Excellence Awards:
🏆 Innovation and Sustainability in Water
🏆 Projects under $2M
These nominations recognise not only the technical innovation, but also the focus on sustainability and local capacity-building that makes this project a model for regional councils across Australia.
Exciting update!
We were very fortunate to win the Innovation & Sustainability in Water category for 2025.

If there’s one thing we can say about Andrew Cleland, no matter how hard the rain falls, he’s always smiling… what a contrast to be out of the high vis gear – congratulations!
